Currency

The currency of Laos is the Kip (LAK). There are bank notes of 500 – 1000 – 2000 – 5000 – 10000 – 20000 – 50000 and 100000 (very rare).

Exchange

February 2011, exchange rate for one US Dollar is about 8,030 Kip.

The alternative currencies accepted in Vientiane and numerous other provincial towns are Thai Baht and US Dollars. The largest Thai bill, 1,000 Baht, has a value of about 30 US Dollars.

Traveller Cheques can be exchanged in many banks and exchange office in all major towns (passport necessary).

It is recommended to carry US Dollars in small denominations (100's and smaller) as well as Thai Baht.

LAK can be exchanged to some foreign currencies

Credit cards are accepted in more and more places, but no local market and small shops.

Banks are open Monday through Friday (except holidays) 8.30 -15.30 (most of them).
